Tasting Note

TASTING NOTE
This Pinot Noir invokes aromas of black Doris plum and cherry, supported by a vibrant floral and spice lift from restrained oak influence. Black fruits flow onto the palate, framed by plush tannins and a bright acidity that provides a tension and length to the wine. Approachable in its youth, it will continue to develop
complexity as it ages.

FOOD MATCHING
This concentrated fruit driven style of Pinot Noir will be the perfect accompaniment for many dishes. Try alongside a pan seared duck breast lathered in cherry and thyme jus. Or, for a vegan alternative, try a wild mushroom and lentil ragu with vegan pappardelle.

Winemaking

WINEMAKING
Our Pinot Noir vines are planted in the deep clay loams of the Southern Valley’s, universally regarded as the finest Pinot Noir terroir in Marlborough. The vines are cane pruned and meticulously tended to achieve a naturally balanced crop of intensely flavoured fruit.

Completely destemmed, but not crushed, with the aim of achieving a significant percentage of intact berries in the ferment. Individual batches were macerated cold prior to a five-day fermentation where the cap temperature was allowed to peak at between 30o – 32oC. The wine remained on skins post fermentation to optimise tannin extraction whilst locking in the ruby colour. Drained and pressed; this wine was aged in a mix of stainless-steel tank and French oak puncheons for nine months during which time it underwent a complete malolactic fermentation.

Vintage

VINTAGE
One of Marlborough’s larger harvests due to near optimal flowering and fruit set conditions during the final months of 2024.

The 2025 growing season began with budburst under warm, sunny weather, allowing vines to make full use of the ample soil moisture retained from winter and the majority of spring was fortunately frost free.

Throughout the early part of the season, Marlborough experienced warm, sunny, and relatively dry conditions, despite a few intense rain events in late October and again mid to late December. The key summer ripening period continued this pattern of favourable weather—warm, sunny, and dry—even though January ranked among the coolest since 2000.

Harvest commenced under sunny skies in March and concluded a month later.

About The Ned

Right in the heart of the magical Waihopai Valley, a million miles from anywhere, lies The Ned - one of Marlborough's most famous peaks - and the childhood playground for founder and winemaker, Brent Marris. It's a place where nights are two degrees colder and days two degrees hotter. Where possibilities take hold and good times unfold, where the young at heart thrive. And where there's liveliness and adventure in every bottle.
