THE KING'S SERIES SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023

THE KING'S SERIES SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023

The vibrant bouquet of tropical fruit aromas is enhanced by delicate nuances of blackcurrant leaf and bell pepper to create a lively, complex expression on the nose.
The rich and textured mouthfeel is complemented by the presence of zesty grapefruit citrus notes and juicy honeydew melon, leading to a lingering, persistent finish.

Try this wine with an arugula salad, seared scallops and citrus vinaigrette or serve with ceviche fish tacos, where the wine’s acidity and bright, zesty flavours will complement the mild spice of the dish.

Winemaking

ORIGIN

Sourced from our Leefield Station Vineyard, and Waihopai vineyards in the Waihopai Valley, Marlborough.

VARIETY

100% Sauvignon Blanc.

WINEMAKING

Selected parcels from our two Waihopai Valley vineyards were harvested at optimum ripeness and pressed into stainless steel tanks. The clean juice was racked and inoculated with yeasts that promote the riper, more exotic aromas of Sauvignon Blanc followed by a long cool fermentation. Components of this wine were chosen due to their punchy aromatic profile, structural completeness and strong expression of Waihopai terroir. Blending, stabilisation and filtration occurred over winter before a spring bottling.

VINTAGE

A warm and wet winter spurred an early start to the growing season with fully charged soil moistures and warm ambient temperatures in early spring. The few frosts through September and October did little to disrupt the healthy development of strong, lush canopies.

Flowering began with cooler temperatures and periodic bouts of rain in the early summer, with the weather improving as we headed towards Christmas; typical with respect to warmth, sunshine hours and rainfall.

Late summer warmth in late February and March along
with careful canopy management, delivered slowly ripened, disease free, incredibly clean fruit!

Harvest commenced in mid-March. Due to the long, cool ripening season, fruit was harvested significantly later than usual but retained all of its vibrancy of flavour and crisp, ripe acids.

The team are excited by the bright flavour expressions and huge diversity of character coming through in the wines of the 2023 vintage.

About The Kings Series

Among the twisted vines of owner Brent Marris’ ancestry was William de Marisco, said to be one of the illegitimate sons of King Henry the First. In the twelfth and thirteenth century, the de Mariscos' inhabited Lundy island off the south-west coast of England, engaged in a tempestuous relationship with the monarchy of the time. At times receiving favour, and at others displeasure, the de Mariscos’ acts of piracy and treason defined their place in history. Celebrating his scandalous family history, Brent Marris presents The Kings Series.
