A tribute to Marlborough pioneer grower John Marris, The Pioneer Chardonnay 2022 has already earned 3 gold medals from prestigious competitions. Sourced from two vineyards originally planted by Marris himself, this wine is crafted with strong character and impressive vision.

Hand-selected fruit is gently whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented in French oak, creating a finely balanced wine with elegant power, harmony, and a lasting finish. Best enjoyed within 6–8 years of vintage. Note: Does not come in gift box.

WINEMAKING

Hand-harvested and whole bunch pressed, the resulting juices were warm fermented on full solids in carefully selected French oak barrels. The young
wines were left to mature on full yeast lees for a
period of 10 months, with occasional stirring. As
the weather warmed in early spring, malolactic
fermentation was encouraged in approximately
two-thirds of the barrels.

Record rainfall in July, August and a warm start to September, permitted an energetic start to the growing season. This coincided with double the usual number of frosts which were replaced by warmer temperatures and humid northerly airflows in October. Early season varieties flowered rapidly while later season varietals were slightly challenged by a cool, wet start to December. Increasing temperatures and a warm, dry January ultimately ensured an abundance of fruit.

Despite heavy February rains, good vineyard practice and increased sunshine hours through the tail end of February meant the vast majority of the resulting fruit was clean and ripe.

Harvesting began in early March due to early season disease pressure with positive fruit flavours indicating physiological ripeness.

The team are excited about the structural diversity and bright complex flavours of the 2022 wines.
