Leefield Station Angus: Built for Commercial Performance

At Leefield Station, the focus is straightforward — breeding Angus cattle that perform where it matters most: in real farming conditions.

While the programme is relatively young, its progress has been deliberate. Drawing on deep industry experience, targeted investment, and disciplined breeding decisions, the Leefield team has worked to accelerate genetic gain while staying grounded in the needs of commercial farmers.

The result is a consistent type of animal — structurally sound, even-tempered, and bred with the resilience to handle hill country systems. Just as importantly, the programme is underpinned by a clear understanding that performance must be matched with affordability.

A Breeding Philosophy Grounded in Resilience

That philosophy was explored in the Beef Country Podcast featuring former manager Greg Crombie, where the focus was on breeding resilience into the herd — not chasing extremes, but building cattle that can adapt, recover, and keep performing.

If you haven’t listened, it provides valuable context to the thinking behind the programme:

This approach continues to guide decision-making today, with an emphasis on balance across growth, fertility, doing ability, and carcass traits.

Strengthening the Programme: Tim Salter

With Tim Salter now in place as farm manager, the programme enters its next phase.

Bringing extensive practical experience and a strong stockman’s eye, Tim adds further depth to the operation while maintaining continuity in direction. His focus aligns closely with Leefield’s core principles — quiet, functional cattle that will get on with the job in a wide range of environments.

As Tim puts it:
“A nice line up of quiet bulls that will perform in any environment.”

The 2026 Bull Draft

This year’s draft is a tight, considered line-up of 19 rising two-year-old Angus bulls, selected for their ability to deliver across commercially relevant traits.

Across the draft, buyers will see:

  • Consistent structure and temperament
  • Strong growth performance balanced with positive fats
  • Depth of maternal strength, with proven cow families retained in the herd
  • High carcass quality indicators, including IMF and EMA
  • A selection of bulls suitable for heifer mating

There is clear sire depth throughout the offering, including sons of Justified, Quiddle, and homebred sire 2029 — each contributing to a well-rounded and practical draft.

Importantly, these bulls have been bred and run in conditions that reflect the realities of many New Zealand farming systems — with a strong emphasis on doing ability, adaptability, and longevity.

See the Bulls for Yourself

There are two opportunities to view the draft on farm:
