THE KING'S FAVOUR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2021
THE KING'S FAVOUR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2021
In 1204, despite apparently using Lundy Island as a base for piracy against North Devon traders and along the English coast, a later William de Marisco was strangely appointed to be in charge of a number of the Royal Galleys - whose very purpose was to defend against such piracy. William was also granted the Manor of Braunton (in Devon) by King John – both these factors were surprising evidence of the King’s Favour.

TASTING NOTE
A lively nose featuring aromas of passionfruit pulp, blackcurrant leaf and an underlying hint of bell pepper. A textured palate is intertwined with flavours of honeydew melon, gooseberry and citrus while still carrying a herbaceous freshness. The prevalent Waihopai acidity drives the length of the wine while keeping the finish deliciously dry.
FOOD MATCHING
This bright, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc pairs wonderfully with seafood and salads. Try The King’s Favour Sauvignon Blanc 2021 with Hapuka sliders and a fresh green salad.

ORIGIN
Sourced from our Leefield Station Vineyard, Marlborough.
VARIETY
100% Sauvignon Blanc.
WINEMAKING
Selected parcels from our Leefield Station vineyard were harvested at optimum ripeness and pressed into stainless steel tanks. The clean juice was racked and inoculated with yeasts that promote tropical aromas and Sauvignon Blanc typicity followed by a long cool fermentation. Components of this wine were chosen due to their punchy aroma profile and strong Waihopai terroir. Blending, stabilisation and filtration occurred over winter before a spring bottling.

VINTAGE
The 2021 growing season had an ideal start – early bud burst after a record warm, dry winter (the second warmest since 1932), and an unusually uneventful frost period. Wet weather in the critical months of November and December challenged flowering and fruit set but the southerly position of the Waihopai Valley, with its typically later flowering, protected most of our vineyards from the worst impacts.
Harvest started early due to optimal grape ripening from dry summer months and record sunshine hours. Fruit was harvested in pristine condition with a calm, steady flow undeterred by significant rain mid-harvest.
Despite smaller yield we captured fruit flavours at their best aided by the absence of vineyard disease, an overall moderately warm, dry season, and proactive harvest plans. The team are very excited by the quality of harvest 2021.
