The King’s Bastard Chardonnay 2013 – Champion White Wine

New World Wine Awards

The King’s Bastard Chardonnay by Marisco Vineyards has won the Trophy for ‘Champion White Wine’ at the 2014 New World Wine Awards, announced today.

Marisco Vineyards Proprietor and Chief Winemaker, Brent Marris, says the win is a significant endorsement of the quality of our Chardonnay production.  “We started a strategic Chardonnay programme from vineyard to winery a number of years ago, and this trophy is true recognition that we are on the right track with our particular style.”

The New World Wine Awards use the same internationally recognised 20-point scoring system as other leading wine competitions, ensuring that medal winning wines are the best example of their type. The only difference is that all wines must retail for below $25 a bottle and at least 6,000 bottles must be available for sale.

“This is now one of New Zealand’s leading wine competitions.  The beauty of its judging criteria is that it ensures consumers have the opportunity to access trophy and Gold medal wines at an affordable price point.” says Marris.

This year there were a record number of entries with 1,165 wines from 175 wineries judged over 3 days.

This win follows on from a recent haul of Gold Medals at the recent China Wine Awards in Shanghai last month.  Marisco Vineyards took home four Double Gold and two Gold Medals,

reported as the most number of Gold Medals won by a New Zealand wine company at the competition.

“We are particularly excited about the Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2014 winning a double GOLD medal – the CWA is this wine’s first show and to take out one of the top medals at its first showing is hugely rewarding,” comments Marris, “we look forward to this wine continuing to gain recognition from our consumers who have grown to love The Ned brand worldwide.”

The Kings Bastard Chardonnay is a consumer favourite!

After each TiZwine tasting a lucky team of consumers are invited to taste all the wines. This is a blind tasting so that no one’s preconceptions can prevail. Wines that are praised by the collective are awarded this prestigious accolade. At the end of the day it is these people who are going to buy the wines and thus determine their success!

3 1/2 Stars TiZwine consumer tasting

From the Marisco Vineyards stable and made by Brent Marris this chardonnay went down really well in the consumer tasting where its rich butterscotch style was particularly admired. It also displays ripe peach characteristics with lifted spicy elements and balanced oak.

We now have our own Bastard, this particular one from Brent Marris’ new label. It’s impressive inaugural chardonnay is big and bold with ripe nectarine and pineapple fruit, toasty nutty undertones underpinned by a restraining citrusy freshness.
